Vlissingen
The maritime city
Vlissingen is known for its maritime, cultural and coastal history. Through trade with France, England and the Baltic, Vlissingen went through a period of growth. Between 1548 and 1552, the Keizersbolwerk was built. This bulwark is still visible next to the Koopmanshaven harbour. On top of the Keizersbolwerk is the statue of naval hero Michiel de Ruyter. He was the operative commander of the Dutch fleet and won many naval battles. He is also the founder of the Marine Corps. On the other side of the promenade, you can hear the sounds of the wind organ.
To get to know Vlissingen and its maritime history better, a visit to the MuZEEum is highly recommended. This MuZEEum is partly located in the Lampsinshuis. Its unique feature is the observation tower that offers a wonderful view of the sea. Experience Vlissingen on a guided city walk through its beautiful streets, courtyards and squares. The city has a mix of old merchant houses and modern architecture. You can combine this walk with a ride in the Zonnetrein.
